Pay with cash

“Cash is king” is the common phrase and it still rings true. Most gas stations will have lower prices when you pay in cash. Check local gas prices here: GasBuddy

You might also be able to negotiate lower prices on lodging and other goods. Cash will always eliminate the 1-5% credit card processing fee that a business typically pays. Just reserve everything ahead of time on a credit card, then pay with cash at checkout.

A side benefit is that you’ll be much more likely to stay on budget when using cash. Once it’s gone, it’s gone! (unlike the bottomless credit card)

There are some credit cards that offer great rewards and even travel insurance. If you have one of these, you might be better off using it to accumulate points or cash back and add a bit of security to your money. It’s a lot easier to lose cash while your credit card will have fraud protection. I’m a huge fan of the Apple Card (not sponsored, I just love it!)

Bring both = better bargaining power!

Plan your day

Trip planning is the single best way to make sure your expenses are predictable while eliminating unnecessary driving and unplanned stops.

There are a TON of resources out there that offer trip planning guides and pre-made itineraries. Use one of those or simply use it as a guide to creating your own.

Enjoy human-powered activities

This is the simplest way to experience the Black Hills on a budget! Hiking, biking, shore fishing, swimming, kayaking, paddle boarding, disc golf, bird watching, photography, etc. There are some of the best ways to enjoy the Black Hills with minimal impact on the wallet and the environment.

Pack your own lunches

Often, the largest travel expense goes to food and drinks. This is especially true during highway travel. I’m absolutely guilty of this! I love a good bag of candy and a soda. Skip the gas station goodies by packing non-perishable grab and go snacks & drinks before you leave home.

Although we have an amazing array of restaurants, coffee shops, wineries, etc. that you definitely should visit, you can supplement your meals with packed lunches and beer, wine and other drinks from the grocery store.
