Sometimes you don’t have to go far to find something amazing. Just 5 miles west of Rapid City is one of the best hiking areas in the Black Hills called Buzzard’s Roost.

This popular hiking area is home to over 10 miles of non-motorized single and two-track trails for hiking and mountain biking. The easiest route to the top is via the North Buzzard Trail but if you want a little more of an adrenaline rush on a mountain bike, Pretty Vulture or Buzzard’s Loop are great options.

Because of its proximity to town and variety or trails, Buzzard’s Roost is typically very busy. To avoid crowds and lots of dogs, it’s best to arrive early on a weekday to see the sun rise or make it a night hike.
